Over
125 years old, Golden Gate Park is one of the defining features
of San Francisco. The story of its creation is an interesting one,
and there is much to be added to this section of the website.

PORTALS
OF THE PAST
A home's entranceway left standing after the 1906 earthquake, becomes
a symbol of hope and perseverance for the future. |
|
STOW
LAKE
One of the few places in town where people could (and still can) rent
a row boat and paddle about while enjoying the park and feeding the
ducks. Stow Lake encircles "Strawberry Hill" and two bridges
(including this "Old Bridge") let pedestrians access the
trails on the hill. |

SWEENEY
OBSERVATORY
A building high atop Strawberry Hill that used to provide an excellent
vantage point to view the entire San Francisco area. The building
was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake, and nothing remains there currently
except for a bit of hidden foundation. |

THE
MUSIC STAND
Out in front of the DeYoung Museum, this structure used to have regular
concerts attended by thousands, and there is still an occasional concert
put on today. This building replaced a previous one that was located
where the tennis courts are today. |
