The movie opens facing East towards the San Francisco Bay. Click and hold mouse over photo and "pan" (slide mouse) to left to face North, and towards Alcatraz Island. The dirt plot directly in front (at the bottom of the photograph) is the site of the current Fairmont Hotel. Pan a little more to the left, and view a couple of fine examples of San Francisco mansions (including a home owned by the Crockers), standing on California Street at the top of Nob Hill. Keep panning around, and you will be able to view a complete 360-degree panorama of 1878 San Francisco.
